Job Summary
GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, manages and coordinates the comprehensive administrative and operational activities of the Fischer Park Nature Center including programs, special events and activities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists in ensuring the delivery of high quality nature education programs and services to the community.
Promotes interest in the study and appreciation of nature and conservation through preparation of exhibits, articles, and publicity releases and through giving or arranging for nature tours or talks.
Collaborates with nature education organizations and community groups to provide programming, coordinate operations and facilitate community participation.
Manages assigned staff and activities to maintain Nature Education Center in a safe condition and to meet community needs; provides leadership to assure that facilities are maintained and programs are coordinated in alignment with the City's strategic objectives, State and Federal laws, and within allocated budget.
Performs liaison functions with local schools, community colleges and universities regarding program and activity planning, educational opportunities, and research projects;
Manages nature education programming and special event coordination and setup; develops additional programming and events to ensure program growth based on customer preference and trends.
Manages gift shop including inventory, sales, and promotion.
Hires, trains and evaluates assigned staff; develops staff skills and conducts performance evaluations; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues; reviews the work of assigned staff to assure the quality and timely accomplishment of assigned duties and responsibilities.
Develops procedures, forms, guidelines, and training programs for all assigned staff members; develops and maintains records, systems, and procedures, as well as written and oral reports and presentations.
Monitors and reviews trends in nature education operations and management issues, and recommends improvements in the City programs.
Responds to all requests for information; provides information to other recreation program managers and organizations; researches recreation issues, and recommends solutions.
Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences, Environmental Studies, Education, Parks and Recreation Administration, or a related field is required; AND three (3) years nature center management and programming experience with two (2) years supervisory experience required.
Required Licenses or Certifications: Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.
Must possess or be able to obtain within 1 year of employment: Community First Aid and Safety/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
Knowledge, Skills and Other Requirements
Required Knowledge of: Principles and practices of education program development and special event management.
Operational characteristics, services and activities of natural resource facility management.
Federal and State safety laws and regulations.
Principles and practices of public relations and
administrative management, including personnel rules, project management, cost accounting, budgeting and employee supervision.
Required Skill in: Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
Supervising staff, and delegating tasks and authority.
Interpreting customer and facility needs and solving customer service and public relations issues.
Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, demands and events.
Analyzing problems, providing alternatives, identifying solutions in support of established goals, projecting consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations.
Responding to emergencies and determining corrective actions using available resources.
Establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with City employees, State and Federal agencies, and the general public.
Operating and maintaining a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software and communications equipment.
Effective, clear and concise communication, both verbally and in writing.
Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work is performed in an office environment; outdoors in all weather conditions; is subject to sitting, standing, bending and reaching for extended periods of time; and must be able to safely pull, push, lift and carry items weighing up to forty (40) pounds.
Must be able to work irregular hours including weekends, holidays and evenings.
May be required to work immediately before, during or after an emergency or disaster.
