Purpose Of Position The Director of Student Mental Health and Well-Being provides strategic leadership for an integrated districtwide system that addresses mental health prevention, intervention, recovery, and workforce capacity to promote wellness, equity, and academic achievement. This position is responsible for building sustainable, equity-centered systems that promote student wellness, academic success, and just outcomes across all MMSD schools. The Director leads and supervises a diverse portfolio of programs and staff, including mental health partnerships, tiered intervention models, school-based clinicians, school social workers and psychologists, suicide and threat risk assessment protocols, mental health literacy initiatives, and intensive support programs such as BHS, Building Bridges, and School-Based Health Centers. This role manages multi-million-dollar budgets and contracts, oversees cross-sector collaborations with healthcare and community partners, and ensures that all efforts are trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and aligned with district priorities and legal requirements. The Director advances innovation through strategic partnerships, professional learning systems, and data-driven decision-making to strengthen workforce capacity, ensure high-impact service delivery, and expand access to care. This includes leading workforce pipeline initiatives, embedding equity-focused training and supervision into field experiences, and leveraging outcome data to inform staffing, retention, and service alignment in high-need school communities. Through cross-departmental collaboration, staff supervision, stakeholder engagement, and system-level evaluation, the Director furthers MMSD’s commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and supportive environments where all students—particularly those from historically marginalized communities—can thrive. Supervisory Responsibilities The Director provides leadership to the district’s mental health and well-being team, with oversight and supervision of key programs delegated to the following roles: Mental Health & Well-Being Coordinator – Oversees district-wide mental health programs and partnerships, leading the team responsible for school-based psychology and social work services School-Based Health Center Coordinator – Oversees integrated school-based behavioral health services, leading the team responsible for mental health coaching and clinical service delivery Mental Health Stabilization Lead – Oversees mental health stabilization programs, leading the team responsible for short-term case management and cross-agency coordination Essential Duties And Responsibilities Program Development & Implementation (40%) Lead the design, implementation, and oversight of districtwide mental health systems, ensuring alignment with legal requirements, the MMSD wellness policy, and strategic priorities; supervise the coordinator of mental health as the director’s deputy; and partner with school leaders to guide effective implementation of mental health programs and partnerships Lead a districtwide mental health and wellbeing system that includes evidence-based, culturally responsive practices, aligns with equity and academic goals, and builds staff capacity through training to support early intervention, prevention, and student safety Oversee universal trauma and depression screening and manage tiered behavioral health supports across 4K-12, including implementation of validated tools, secure data tracking, caregiver consent, and co-facilitated group interventions, with ongoing monitoring to evaluate impact and ensure compliance Provide leadership for districtwide substance use prevention and response, including early identification, intervention, and recovery supports; align efforts with mental health priorities, oversee staff training and SBIRT implementation, and lead continuous improvement of policies, curriculum, and practices through a coordinated, evidence-based approach Oversee intensive mental health and wraparound services for students with complex needs, ensuring coordinated, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive support across school, family, and community systems; manage high-intensity partnerships, legal agreements, and cross-functional triage processes to ensure timely access to individualized interventions, psychiatric consultation, and crisis stabilization Provide strategic leadership for school-based social workers and psychologists by guiding program direction, establishing evidence-based practices, and collaborating with site supervisors to ensure alignment with legal standards, district mental health priorities, and tiered systems of support Lead the district’s school-based behavioral health partnership, overseeing embedded, trauma-informed mental health services in 20+ schools; ensure therapist placement and supervision, maintain clinical and ethical standards, and guide evaluation, impact monitoring, and strategic expansion efforts Lead the integration of behavioral health services within school-based health centers at all four comprehensive high schools, ensuring trauma-informed, culturally responsive mental health and substance use support; oversee clinician placement, alignment with MTSS and student services goals, and program evaluation to inform continuous improvement and future expansion Lead mental health navigation systems to help students and families access appropriate services by addressing barriers related to need, urgency, insurance, culture, and language; provide strategic direction for staff supporting navigation and bilingual communication, and guide public-facing efforts to promote awareness, access, and equity in mental health care Provide executive leadership for the district’s school-based social-emotional group intervention supporting K–12 students facing challenges such as anxiety, grief, and peer conflict; oversee partnership coordination, budget management, implementation fidelity, and program evaluation, ensuring alignment with trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and district support systems Provide mental health leadership in crisis prevention, response, and recovery; serve as the administrative designee for district and school-based critical response teams; coordinate with schools to assess psychological risk, mobilize resources, restore safety, and support trauma-informed recovery after critical incidents. Fiscal Strategy & Resource Alignment (20%) Manage and align multiple funding streams, including district dollars and external grants, to support a sustainable, braided funding model Oversee multi-million-dollar mental health budgets and ensure compliance with grant requirements from application to reporting Strategically allocate financial resources to suicide prevention, trauma-informed initiatives, mental health assessments, and staff development Partner with internal teams and community organizations to pursue funding opportunities that enhance and sustain school-based mental health services Strategic Leadership for Mental Health Innovation (15%) Serve as the senior strategist for all district mental health and well-being efforts, guiding cross-departmental implementation and alignment Lead innovation through strategic partnerships that integrate research, practice, and workforce development, enhancing districtwide mental health systems and contributing to national leadership in school-based mental health. Develop and implement sustainable workforce models that strengthen the recruitment, preparation, and retention of diverse, culturally responsive school-based mental health professionals Embed equity-centered training and supervision into all internship, practicum, and field experiences, ensuring alignment with district priorities and student needs Collaborate with higher education institutions, funders, and internal leaders to expand access and pathways for multilingual and underrepresented professionals Leverage outcome data to drive continuous improvement, retention strategies, staffing placement, and high-need school capacity-building Lead the design and delivery of professional learning systems, including implementation of SRA+, SBIRT, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed practices. This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and may involve walking, sitting, stooping or reaching. Manual dexterity is necessary for completing general tasks while operating office equipment. This position may require being stationary for extended periods of time.
